Do you know How khadi was introduced? If not then you are in right place.
khadi has a great history. This fabric has been manufacturing thousands of years in India. Almost 85% of textile export used to the world only from India around 250 years ago. Each and every house used to manufacture this fabric in our country because it is manufacture by the hands not even use a single machine. You can say every house had a micro industry of this fabric on that time.
A muslin fabric was demanded across the world for its finest quality almost 300 years ago. Many stories are popular of this fabric like a full sari could pass through a small ring and It was 8th times thinner than a huaman hair. The muslin khadi fabric used to export all over the world. It could be only measured in gold. No other metal or coin or expensive things could be measured this muslin khadi fabric. You can imgine what kind of quality used to be in that khadi fabric on that time.

India’s 1st prime minister Pt. Nehru ji wrote in his book ‘Glimpses of world history’ about this fabric is four thousand year old mummies of Egypt were wrapped in fine Indian muslin. The skill of Indian artisan was famous in East as well as the west.
During the British era khadi fabric used to export across the world because of its finest quality and measured by gold. The British government decided to take over this handcraft industry. They had destroyed all the hand loom tools and cut the thumbs of the weavers to wipe out competition to their mill made fabric.
They killed almost 1.5 million spinners and weavers on that time. After destroying all the things by English government many spinners and weavers had to come in farming filed to get two times food and feed their children.
The British government ruined whole handcraft industry and brought power loom industries. So this way Indian handcrafts industry ruined by the British and started their spinning mills.
In 1920s mahatma Gandhi had started swadeshi movement (Khadi movement) to influence the people to boycott all British mill made products and start wearing khadi clothes. He also started spinning in charka and decided to wear only this fabric. Thousands of people started spinning and wearing khadi after influencing by Gandhi ji.

Gandhi ji said –
Khadi/Khaddar is the concrete and central fact of swadesi. Swadeshi without khadi is like body without life, fit only to receive a decent burial or cremation. The only swadeshi cloth is khaddar. If one is to interpret swadeshi in the language of and in terms of the million of this country, khaddar is a substantial thing in swadeshi like the air we breathe. The test of swadeshi is not the universality of participation in the production or manufacture of such article.

The British government had to think about this movement because the whole Indians started boycotting mill made clothes and wearing khadi. That’s how contributed in freedom fighting against the British government.
After independence Indian government had established an organisation called KVIC (Khadi and villages industries commission) in 1956. The organisation works for promoting the khadi and supply raw material called puni and manufacturing tools provide quality control, certification and marketing platforms across the country.
During the decade of 1990 khadi became a global trend the world recognized the quality of khadi and Indian also start wearing again. Narendra modi ji also wear regularly khadi dresses for many years and after becoming prime minister he also influence the people to wear khadi.

His khadi jacket became global trend. All over the world started wearing khadi jacket. In U.S.A people and many officers wear khadi jacket and called it modi jacket. The president of South Korea Moon jae-in inspired to Narendra modi ji and often he sees in khadi jacket.
